Representative Laurie Slade FunderburkLaurie Slade Funderburk was first elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, District No. 52 – Kershaw County, in June 2004, to fill the unexpired term of Vincent A. Sheheen. She serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Ethics Committee. Rep. Funderburk also serves as Chair of the General Assembly Women’s Caucus, Vice-Chair of the SC Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus, and as Treasurer of the SC House Rural Caucus. She is a board member of the Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments and a State Director for Women in Government. Rep. Funderburk served on the steering committee that created the SC Food Policy Council.

A life-long resident of Kershaw County, Rep. Funderburk is a 1997 graduate of the South Carolina Honors College and a 2001 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law. A sole practitioner in Camden, Rep. Funderburk is past President of the Kershaw County Bar Association and a former law clerk for the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Rep. Funderburk was selected to be a member of the Liberty Fellowship Class of 2008, a statewide values-based leadership initiative. In 2007, she traveled to Australia as a Delegate with the American Council of Young Political Leaders. In 2008, Rep. Funderburk was honored to be selected for the Toll Fellowship Program which seeks to develop the next generation of leaders from all three branches of state government and from around the country.

In 2010, Rep. Funderburk received a SC Chamber of Commerce Business Advocate Award. The Carolina Recycling Association named Rep. Funderburk “SC Political Leader of the Year” in 2009. In 2008, Rep. Funderburk was honored to be recognized as the “Conservationist of the Year” by the Kershaw County Soil and Water Conservation District. In 2005, Rep. Funderburk and her family were recognized as the Kershaw County Agribusiness Family of the Year, and, also in 2005, the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County presented Rep. Funderburk with the Harriett Phelps Service Award for “outstanding service and commitment to the arts.”

Rep. Funderburk serves on the board of directors for the Kershaw County Community Medical Clinic, the Carolina Cup Racing Association, and the National Steeplechase Museum. She is also a member of the South Carolina Women Lawyer’s Association, the Camden Rotary Club, the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce, the Kershaw County Master Gardeners, and the Kershaw County Forest Landowners Association.

Rep. Funderburk, her husband, Bill, and their sons, Slade (4 years old) and Burch (6 months old), reside in Camden and attend Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church.
